I am a structural designer, have to wait to get a few years experience then take a test to be a licensed structural engineer. Basically what I do is run calculations on buildings and spec out what size of beams, columns, etc they need to use. I actually really love where I work like my boss and everything but the commute to work is not fun.. it takes an hour to get there and an hour to get home.. so basically my work day is almost half the day.

Awesome. At least you love what you do. So many people commute to jobs they hate. Commuting would suck a**. Thankfully I live 3 minutes on foot from my job. The joys and horrors of literally living at work lol

What I do is kind of boring, I meant I got into a really good office to do it in.. like my boss and I talk about movies and sports a lot during the day.

I need to get some sort of savings thing worked out... I haven't put money into my savings account for a while now lol. I'd like to start some sort of savings goal, I guess for April. Is that how much you have in your saving or checking account?

Oh and the job im working on is like, road construction and pipe installation and sh*t. So no buildings or anything. So they're basically trenching alongside the road and installing giant drainage pipes Because the road slumping so much that it's about to fall off the cliff. It'll be interesting when they have to install a million drainage pipes down the side of the cliff. That's where we expect all the fossils to be.

Is that how much you have in your saving or checking account? I have $4,150 in savings right now. $94 in checking. I keep a little in there so I have daily money available if needed but I'm trying to get out of the habit of buying lunch or a snack or Vitamin Water in the afternoon. Bringing my lunch to work--spinach & red peppers on a corn tortilla, plus peanut butter on corn tortillas for snacks. Pretty cheap way to eat. Drinking coffee throughout the day that I paid for ahead of time in our office Coffee Co-op. Drinking water on breaks & after work. My goal is to have $4,400 in savings by April 1st. After that, I want to save $1,000 a month, at least. So April 1st - May 1st, I should have at least $5,400 in savings. What goal do you want to set for April?

Have you ever tried mint.com? It was recommended by a friend a few years ago and I've used it to track spending, budgets, and goals. And you can track your net worth over time. I connect all my accounts so I know how much money I have, how much I have on my loans etc. I like it.
My favorite feature is the month to month income/spending ratio so you can watch the trends of how much you're actually making or losing per month. And you can categorize purchases to look for ways to budget.

I like that you can see itemized spending pre-fit into a budget by category. I can see where I'm spending, set adjustable limits on categories, etc. This is really good.

I'll have to check that out too. Y'all have gotten me starting to think about my finances and stuff lol. Which I suppose it's never too early to start keeping track of. I decided I want to have $1,000 saved up for rent money by the end of April but with my income being so low due to the limited hours I can work, that may be too ambitious. So maybe $750 by the end of April and like $1,200 by the end of May. I found out my really good friend needs someone to live with him after June and the rent is the lowest I've found in the area I need to live in so... I guess I need to start saving because I REALLY need to move out. Cause commuting to school is killing me!

Sounds like the stars might be aligning for you with the lead on the apartment!

Finally filed my taxes this weekend. Awaiting a nice return. $223 federal & $432 state! Because I moved this year & paid rent at two different locations where I want to claim a renter's deduction, I have to submit my state return via the mail instead of e-filing which means a delay...God, I hope get the full amount. $650 would give me a huge boost.

Alright, I'm actually deciding to try for another $1,500 saved by the end of April.
Starting at $4,800, this means that I will have $6,300 by May.
Here we go...

I just decided that I want to take this a step further. I want to save an additional $6,000 by August. This means that come August, I'll have $10,800 in my savings account. I live in a college town & August is when everyone moves or leaves town. I want to be secure enough by then to be able to make a move without being held in place by immediate financial fears. That means that this will be a summer of hard work & commitment. Nervous but ready.

$5,700 in savings at this point. I just found out that my grandmother left each grandchild $1,000 inheritance which is very nice & will help me get one step closer to secure housing which I know she would have wanted.
I'm regularly clocking at least 60 hours a week at this point & volunteering at least 14 hours. Feeling pretty tired & worn out but also committed.
On track.

Good! I'm putting in lots of overtime with this construction project. It's $28/hour. The people in my job site think I make $40/hour overtime. I'm like ok they really must hate me, but i think most of them make more than me or the same. I literally do nothing so if they think I make more then u know they're talking sh*t. I haven't said sh*t though. I know the inspector (who's around my age) makes like $37/hour overtime and put in 48 hours of overtime last period. That's on top of his regular 80 hour normal pay. That should be illegal.
Finally did my taxes and got my return. Time to pay off my car maybe?
