I don't understand how Gravity won awards outside of the VFX, the movie wasn't that good

Has anyone been keeping up with the Nominees? I've been binge-watching them recently. Hoping Boyhood does well. I don't really get why certain people were nominated though...like Emma Stone, Ethan Hawke and Mark Ruffalo. I didn't even think Ed Norton was anything special in Birdman. Ralph Fiennes was better than both of them and deserves a nomination out of respect to his greatness.

Isn't Meryl Streep nominated for Supporting Actress? Yeah, I didn't see Into the Woods. I don't think Meryl has much of a chance though, from what I've heard. Though she is Meryl so you never know...
