And now continuing my rankings... As usual, would love to see everyone else's opinion.
Just finished my rewatch of Africa, and let me tell you... very few interesting characters this time around. I decided to do things differently this time, and I did all my write ups at the end of the season instead of right after each boot like Borneo and Australia. That turned out to be a bad idea because I had very little to say about most of these people... because quite frankly, by the time the finale came around I had forgotten who most of these people are. So yeah, not going to be a great ranking due to the very unmemorable cast, but here we go anyways.
16. Lindsey Richter (11th Place) During my first watch, I actually liked Lindsey and she probably would have been in the top half of the season, but rewatching… I couldn’t stand her to the point where her voice annoyed me. I felt like she was the leader of the youngers, and rubbing it in the elders faces with her necklaces. Yeah… not a fan anymore.
15. Brandon Quinton (8th Place) I sort of liked him during my first watch, but now I realize how stupid of a move he made and I realize that he really screwed over his own game. Plus I liked the youngers in first watch, and hated them second watch… so they all kind of dropped just because of that alliance.
14. Carl Bilancione (14th Place) All I remember is that he lost in a tiebreaker. The early boots in Africa were very unmemorable as you will see in my ranking… I think Carl was the person to talk about how much money he had or something like that (I could be completely wrong here), but that makes him lower than the other early boots.
13. Jessie Camacho (15th Place) Remember nothing about her except she got sick.
12. Silas Gaither (12th Place) I didn’t hate him as much as some other people seem to hate him, but I definitely didn’t like him. The whole “keep voting for Lindsey so it doesn’t screw us youngers up, but we’ll keep voting you off one by one” was stupid. Glad he got screwed over by the switch because it would have sucked if there was no switch and he made it to the merge.
11. Diane Ogden (16th Place) Similar to Jessie, not much to say about her because I barely remember her. I remember she got sick, and got Clarence in trouble for opening the can of beans. Higher than Jessie simply because of the bean incident.
10. Tom Buchanan (4th Place) Okay, let me start by saying I’ve gone from hating Tom, to liking Tom, to hating Tom, to finding him to be just alright. I found it hard to understand most of what he was saying which I guess was funny at some times, but at other times it was annoying (think Malik from SFC8 if you read that, except not nearly as bad). He had funny moments, especially the drunk moments on rewards.
9. Lex van den Berghe (3rd Place) Talk about taking things way to personal in a game where you sign up to be backstabbed. I started off liking him early in the season, but it got tiring to see him get upset over one vote at tribal council. He had the attitude of “I’m Lex, how dare you vote me out” and it’s like… really? Do you not realize what you signed up for?
8. Frank Garrison (7th Place) Frank was pretty interesting to say the least. I don’t really like him, but he had good moments so he’s not as low as some other people. He was very opinionated, and that made him annoying and funny at the same time. Plus he was opposing the young alliance. Yeah, I’m very mixed on Frank.
7. Kim Johnson (2nd Place) She wasn’t very interesting or entertaining, and really one of the few things that stand out about her to me is how slow she was in all the running challenges. Not saying that’s bad, but really it’s one of the very few things I noticed about her.
6. Clarence Black (10th Place) Opposite to Lindsey, during my first watch I didn’t like him at all, but during the rewatch he was actually pretty good. The bean incident was actually interesting, but the fact that it kept getting brought up episode after episode… I just felt like the tribe should have gotten over it, but they never really did. It was cool watching him survive with that hanging on everyone’s mind.
5. Ethan Zohn (Winner) As a winner, Ethan was pretty boring. He never really had a key moment in the game, and as we learned in the final tribal council, he didn’t build many personal relationships. If I forget about the fact that he was the winner, he’s alright because a lot of the characters this season were pretty boring, but since he was the winner I expected a little more out of him. Luckily for him there’s a lot more boring people than him, and although I try not to let other seasons sway my decision, I can’t help but put him a little higher due to All Stars.
4. Linda Spencer (13th Place) Linda is the first pre-merge boot that I actually liked. She gave good confessionals, and she was very energetic despite being on the losing side of the tribe. The hug with Lindsey was a pretty funny moment.
3. Kim Powers (6th Place) If I only based it on pre-merge, she would be much lower due to association, but she redeemed herself at the merge. It was interesting to watch Brandon and Kim’s alliance fall apart. Not a lot to say about her, but for some reason I liked her.
2. Kelly Goldsmith (9th Place) I liked Kelly because she played a strategic game and yet I still considered her one of the nicer people in the game. I’ll admit, she wasn’t all that memorable, but from what I remember she was playing the game pretty hard and risked herself to switch over to the other tribe… only to get screwed over my Brandon. And it was funny how she hated Lex.
1. Teresa Cooper (5th Place) I feel like a lot of people will disagree with this, but I felt Teresa was a Tina 2.0, and I liked Teresa a lot more that I liked Tina. I felt she was given more screen time than Tina was and was more likeable than Tina. I definitely wanted Teresa to win, and it sucked that she didn’t… but at the same time, it wouldn’t have been great following Australian Outback where someone similar to her already won.

So I'm relatively new to Survivor. My first full season I watched was Cagayan. But I just recently watched the first two seasons and I'm now on Africa. And I absolutely love it so far. Lex is super paranoid all the time which made for the pretty interesting blindside of Kelly. I consider this the first season that focuses on strategy more than the survivng aspect of Survivor. Borneo had Richard Hatch, but that was it. I'm on episode 9 right now and well yeah. Pretty good season.

Just finished. Such a great season. Great cast with the right balance between strategy and story telling. I thought Kim Johnson got a bad wrap and she was actually a good player. Reminded me a lot of Trish, and I'm not just talking about her appearance. I was happy with Ethan winning. Overall, definitely my favorite season out of the first 3, which for some reason isn't a very popular opinion.

One of the more underrated seasons.

Kelly Goldsmith is great. She needs to come back the next time they do Second Chance or HvV or whatever. But since she's like a lawyer or something, she probably won't.

1. Borneo While it may have been one of the least conventionally exciting seasons ever, it was still the first season, and with the cast as amazing as it was, it made up for the lack of strategy and actual playing of the game. I think what sets it apart from Australian Outback is that it's the OG season and Richard, Sue, Rudy and Kelly are the most amazing Final Four in the history of Survivor.
2. Africa It's weird because on my original watch of this season, I wasn't a huge fan and thought the first two seasons were for sure better, but after rewatching it, it's actually a really good season. Once again, casting did so good this time, possibly the best so far actually. There were so many good characters throughout both phases of the game, with Silas and Lindsey being fun to watch, and then the entire merge tribe was great, especially the final five. Also had the best merge game of any season so far, with Teresa and Lex keeping things interestng even if it was a straightforward vote.
3. Australian Outback This season had a great pre-merge, but the post-merge was very boring. While this season also benefitted from a very strong cast, I think Borneo's cast was stronger overall. It also seemed to actually digress rather than progress in the amount of game playing there was, taking out the advantage this cast had of knowing how the game works, while in Borneo they were literally thrown into unknown territory and had to figure it out for themselves.
1. Richard Hatch To have the winner of the very first season, where nobody knew anything about the game before playing, be such a witty and manipulative person is amazing. Hatch had a firm grip on the game, but of course he also had many flaws on top of this. However, compared to Tina, they both had the social game, but Richard had the strategy to overpower her game.
2. Tina Wesson Tina's social game is one of the best in Survivor history easily, however, beyond that, Tina really didn't do any strategic work to get to the end. Not to mention, Colby had much more control over how the game was going to go than Tina did. Tina played a solid game for the time she was playing, but not strong enough to be high up on the list.
3. Ethan Zohn He gets a lot of credit in the TEOS podcast, and by fans in general I feel but I'm not entirely sure why he got SO much credit. He's a strong winner for sure, but he lacked in social game, confirmed by many of the players. He did pick the right people to trust and align himself with though, and he had a good enough social game to get him to the end, and there were definitely strategic moves he made throughout the game.

Yeah I agree on Ethan tbh. My ranking would go: Tina > Richard > Ethan, I'm interested on your thoughts on Vecepia. I've found she's always underrated or overrated by people.

I like Vecepia and the kind of winner she is. I don't think she's given enough credit because she wasn't a super exciting character, but she played well.

ReviewThis cast was really solid. Probably one of the stronger of these early seasons... and this feels like the first season where strategy took a huge part. Yeah, Australia had a little bit, but this one felt like it took that all even a step further. I remember watching this one for the first time and hating it, but it does really well on a rewatch. It was really cool to see how real it was, and how the wildlife would literally come right up the where they were sleeping at night. It felt like they were in some real danger this time and the survival element felt way different than the first two seasons. AwardsPlayer of the Season: Teresa Hero of the Season: Teresa Villain of the Season: Lex Rankings 16. Lex I think Lex may be one of my least favorite Survivor contestants ever. He's way to cocky and takes everything way to personal. He gets one vote against him and goes crazy over it... Luckily he's only half as bad as he's about to be in Survivor All Stars.
15. Tom For some reason this guy is a fan favorite? I don't get it. I don't think anything he's ever done has been funny, and he's just extremely extremely annoying. Also one of my least favorite Survivors ever.
14. Lindsey I know I used to find her extremely annoying, and she still is a little bit... but not nearly as bad this time around. Her young person alliance might just be one of my least favorite alliances in Survivor history though.
13. Brandon He wasn't terrible, but he made some pretty stupid moves. I'm glad he got out when he did, and I think Ethan was completely right when he said Brandon was the least deserving person on the jury.
12. Carl Pretty unmemorable other than the fact that he had his "richer than everyone else" segment. Only gets higher because he opposed the young person alliance.
11. Silas A lot of people hate him... I think he's not as bad as people say. He got screwed over by a twist, and I feel had that twist not happened he probably would have made it very far in the game (which would suck because that would mean the other young people would have gone far as well). He was a bit cocky and annoying though, and the whole telling the old people to vote for Lindsey so it wouldn't screw over the young person alliance was hilarious. I'd be like "f*** no"
10. Jessie Meh, she was pretty sick during her 6 days there it seemed like. Had higher expectations from her being a police officer, but I guess it shows the conditions take a toll on anyone. No opinion on her.
9. Kim J. I think the most boring runner up from the first three seasons. She really didn't do much except follow along with Ethan... and then it wasn't until the end where she was able to break up the threesome.
8. Clarence He caused some drama which bumps him some points for me. The whole food incident with Diane was entertaining, and the cherry incident as well. This guy definitely left a very bad first impression.
7. Diane She was a pretty subdued character, mostly because she didn't have time to shine... but her calling out Clarence was amazing and so unexpected.
6. Ethan I can't believe how boring he was as a winner. He just really seemed to have little personality, but he played a decent game. He got in with the right people and made good strategic moves. And he seemed like a genuinely nice guy, so that boosts him some points.
5. Frank I used to really dislike him, but this time I respected him a lot more. Yeah he was way too serious, but it was kind of funny to watch with so many loud personalities around... just this one person who is like dead face the entire time.
4. Kim P. The only person from the young person alliance that I really did like. She just seemed like a really nice person who got stuck with the wrong group. A lot of people on the cast seemed to like her also. I mean, yeah, maybe she didn't do all that much in the game, but her final tribal council performance was good.
3. Linda I love this girl. She's easily my favorite pre merge boot so far from these first three seasons. She's nuts, and she's not afraid to speak her find. She was really enjoyable to watch, and her being the one to speak most against the young person alliance was amazing.
2. Kelly I wish she was seen more than she was. I'm sure if she was in a future season she'd be a bigger character. I will always respect her for her hatred against Lex, and just being outspoken and her confessionals are easily the best out of anyone this season.
1. Teresa I still feel like Teresa is a better version of Tina. Teresa actually played with a lot of strategy, and tried to make moves while still being the sweet, older lady. It's always nice to see the sweet, older lady play a decent game... whereas in future seasons we have people like Sherri and Dawn who aren't as sweet as they seem to be. Who Should Come Back1. Teresa
She's extremely likeable, and can be a good strategic player. I think she may be a bit too nice to play in the big leagues now (haha), but it would still be interesting to watch. It's a shame she wasn't voted into Second Chance. I still call rigging on that. 2. SilasSilas I think could end up being a strong power player in a more recent season. I'm sure he'd be an annoying alpha male, but I actually do think he would play a good game... now that he would expect twists and stuff. 3. KellyI know this is never going to happen, but she would be a fun person to have back. I feel like every season needs a character like her, who's not afraid to speak her mind and go against top dogs. Winner Rankings1. Richard HatchHe's iconic because he's the first winner, and to be fair he played a really, really good game considering it was the first season. He's strategic, and he was all around a really interesting character. He pissed people off, and somehow still found himself winning the game. 2. Tina Wesson It's kind of nice to see the exact opposite from the first seasons winner. Richard was a strategic player, whereas Tina perfected the social aspect of the game. Sadly she wasn't as interesting, and honestly she wouldn't be as memorable as Richard. 3. Ethan ZohnHe's a very disappointing winner I think. He didn't really play that strong of a game and just seemed to be in the right alliance at the right time. He never really had any struggles, and pretty much just sailed right to the end. Also not much personality which drops him big time. Season Rankings1. AfricaI really enjoyed this while rewatching it. I feel like everything was picked up a notch, and everyone was there to play the game. It felt a lot more real, and the danger of the survival element just seemed so much more threatening. The cast I also feel was a lot stronger than the first two seasons, and we get the first real twist in Survivor history which effected the game. 2. Australian OutbackI'm a little surprised by this, considering last round of rewatches I did, I definitely liked Borneo better. But this time, Borneo just felt really unbearable, and I actually got a little bit of enjoyment out of this season. Also a lot more memorable events happened in this season, and the survival element felt a lot more real. The strategic game I felt also really picked up this time around. 3. BorneoYeah, the cast was stronger in this season... but the editing, and the lack of strategy made it extremely difficult to watch. It had it's moments, but I feel like if I were to rank this one higher it would simply be due to it being the iconic first season. But yeah, I would much rather watch Australia than this one. The editing style also brings it down a bit.

Well I just finished this season and I was a little underwhelmed but there were a few things that made it interesting. The first would probably be the danger element from the wildlife to the point where people had to look out at night to make sure they weren't attacked. This didn't affect the game drastically but this wasn't really a problem in the past couple seasons.
The second thing is the more blatant statement of strategy. This occurred first in the Samburu camp before the tribe swap where there was actually a conversation in which the younger members said that they were going to pick off the older members one by one. Normally, that's incredibly taboo and it ended up ruining Silas's game going forward because of the tribe swap. A couple other times would be the tribal council in which Kelly was voted out and when it came to the Lex/Tom confrontation in the Final 4. This made it interesting because strategy was a very small part of the footage from the past two seasons, but it ended up affecting the game drastically and in this season, it started to become more evident, which explained some movements of the game.
The third thing would be the lackluster characters and how long it took to get to know them. There are obviously a couple exceptions, Linda, T-Bird, KP, KJ and Kelly, in no particular order. Kelly and Linda weren't in the game very long, but they were memorable for different reasons. I found it took a lot longer, maybe around the tribe swap, for me to actually learn anything about the characters. Usually I can at least get a first impression from some of them, but they were just unmemorable for the most part. Also, while Tom was a memorable character, he was ignorant, extra and occasionally funny. I would like to add that although I don't like Lex and the way he played, he is a pretty good mental competitor.
The fourth thing would be the Final 2. What made them interesting is that, correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure Ethan didn't have a single vote cast against him and KJ had a couple, but managed to stay under the radar. Ethan was an okay player but overall, he was a floater and didn't deserve this win. KJ won the last two immunity challenges because of her willpower and showed that even though she didn't win challenges before that point, she had the capability to all along. In my opinion, he didn't really fill the role of a survivor because he coasted through the game and in the end, KJ's will was shown to be stronger. She chose to not direct attention to herself and he didn't because he wasn't interesting enough to even be a target.
This season falls to the lowest spot in my ranking of the first three seasons, but from reading the rest of this thread, apparently it's better the second time around.

Just watched this season and I don’t understand why Kim chose Ethan over Lex. Lex had known enemies and votes against him (Lindsey, Tom). I’m not sure she would have won either way, but I thought that would improve her chances.
Also, food did not seem to be as big of an issue this season. Fishing and rice was an integral part of the first two season, but it seemed like this season eating wasn’t that big of deal. Found that interesting.
