Have you ever heard of Pop Goes Punk? Where they take pop songs and do punk covers? .... Is that what "pop-punk" is, or is it an entirely different sub-genre?

It's one of those stupid cd series where Fearless Records thinks that you can take Pop songs and make them sound decent with a punk feel. Generally trash imo but there are some decent ones. (This wasn't on a "Punk Goes..." album and was actually released on a ADTR album but I love it) Then there's the ones that are just laughably bad.. aka anything Attack Attack! ever releases but I digress. There's a couple decent songs off the other "Punk goes..." albums but all in all it's just individual bands putting out a decent adaptation as opposed to the song being good.

If anyone is interested in checking out the genre's I feel like ADTR is probably the best place to start. They're self proclaimed "pop-punk" but they fit a nice niche role in between post-hardcore and pop-punk imo. They don't have the younger sound of say a Blink 182/Sum 41 but they're also much softer than someone like early Bring Me The Horizon.

I'm not sure if you saw the I Prevail cover of Blank Space that was circulating around Facebook a month or so back but most people liked it because of how good Blank Space was. It's basically a glorified NOW that is meant to appeal to the pop masses more than to the pop-punk masses.

The guy who sings this:
also sung this:
That's one of the things I love about this genre.. a lot of bands have transitioned from heavier stuff into a more mellow tone.

2015 was probably the best year for pop-punk since 2011 tbh.
Neck Deep (my new favorite band) hit so hard and then Knuckle Puck/The Story So Far had self titled albums that were straight bangerz. Also State Champs as per usual. Also Real Friends (Whom I'm not really into much) and The Wonder Years going hard as usual.
I know no one else really listens to this stuff but this is def the time to get into it lmao.
