Due to snowy weather & hazardous road conditions, 3/4 events scheduled during my recent cafe shifts have been canceled. Tonight I was there 4-9pm. I think I saw 10 people in the door all night. Made $3 in tips by close. This week was supposed to be killer for me in terms of hours accrued & tips totaled with all of those big events scheduled. Super disappointed.
On top of that, I sat in a "potential first home buyer" seminar all day 9am-3:45pm and will do the same next Saturday. Its a free two session course sponsored by the city meant to give folks the tools to prepare for entering the home buying market. At the end of both sessions, attendees receiving a certificate for $5,000 from HUD toward a downpayment on a house in the city limits which is really cool! Today was focused on credit, debt, and savings. Even though it was BORING as hell, I walked away feeling good about my aggressive savings plans & the work I had lined up to reach my goals...then went in to a dead cafe. Hopefully things get better from here on out!

I love tax season because it means refund season.
I hit a deer on my way to my new job. Didn't ruin my car but now I have some unexpected expenses for that. Not sure what I wanna do about my insurance claim. I have a $500 deductible. First estimate is $1800 to fix all the damage...and it's not even a lot of damage. I'm not sure what I wanna do. It's mostly cosmetic fixes, since the car itself is fine...I probsbly only need to get new blinker caps to cover the damage done to safety features. My car is almost paid off so I dont wanna pour a ton of money into it. I've got 137,000 miles on it and I haven't had major problems with it. It's kinda jank right now since I need to get some brake work done on it too probably.
Oh and the reason I decided to comment is because after reading y'all's comments, I wanted to brag that my rent is $180/month. smilesmile

But once you pay the $500 deductible, the rest is on your insurance company, right? I've been thinking a lot lately about saving up to buy a car but things like this terrify me. That rent rate is amazing!

Got paid this week. Covered rent then lumped most of the remaining funds into my savings account. Just transferred $400 more in to savings. I'm up to $3,300 saved, total. $1,100 more to go by April 1st to meet my goal.
I also finished the second of a two session seminar for potential first time home buyers sponsored by the city. This means that I'm now able to receive $5,000 from the city toward a down payment on a house. The offer is good into the future which is awesome because I am not near close to being ready to buy a house right now but I might want to in the next few years.
Just gotta keep working on this saving effort for now.

Budgeting toward this goal is hard...I've had a few small jobs fall through. Event cancellations at the cafe have meant fewer tips. I broke my glasses and had to buy a new pair unexpectedly. I'm not sure if I'm going to make my goal by April 1st but I'm trying to stay focused. I also just miss spending more freely

Budgeting isn't that hard imho. I'm budgeting toward a specific goal which requires me to save a large portion of my monthly income. That feels difficult to me. Admittedly, I've had a problem in the past spending more than I should on going out (food & drink), books, records, etc. I've tightened my grip on my wallet considerably over the past year. At this point, I'm past breaking spendthrift habits and focused on aggressively saving money.

My friends and I started looking at apartments today.... yeah there's no way I can afford one. How do people do it? Minimum we found for a decent one close to campus was $600+. Due to school I can only work about 20 hours a week maximum, at my $8/hour job is just $640 a month, and more often than not I don't even reach 20 hours a week. I like my job because it's extremely flexible with the hours I can work (which I really need) and I don't really want to quit. I can't take on another job really because I don't have time. Like it just sucks!

Trying to save up for a car and a trip to Austria, but I don't get any hours at work due to my sexist boss. So that's fun...

Like it just sucks! I went & looked at apartments this past fall. Same situation here. $475 was the cheapest that I saw for a studio but that was an outlier. Almost all hovered $525 - $600. Honestly, I have no idea how people. Either their rent is being subsidized by their parents or they're putting all of their earnings into rent & living off of credit cards.

Ha ha, it's true. Its possible to use them responsibly but I did not. I fear getting myself in back in to trouble if I use them again but some folks are able to use them with no issues & build good credit.

My brother started with credit cards when he was 19 or 20, hes 21 now with a credit score of like 780
