According to Akan mythology, all humans lived deep within the earth. One day, eight men, five women, a leopard, and a dog crawled out of a hole made by a massive worm. Looking around them, the astonished people became terrified, but Adu Ogyinae—the first man on the surface—seemed to understand the world and its wonders. He calmed them and gave them strength by laying his hands on them. Adu Ogyinae also took charge and grouped the people into work teams. He coordinated the building of their first shelters until a tree he was chopping down fell on and killed him.
Without a leader, the group was deeply hurt by the tragic death of their leader, and they held a funeral for Adu, where each of the seven men, five women and the dog and the leopard attended. Adu’s burial was held at the bottom of the board below, taking up the length of two people. There were 14 other spots marked for each person in the group, for there was was a very specific way they could be next to those they cared about most. There was a spot directly to the left and a spot directly to the right of Adu. Then above Adu there were three rows of four.
Adu had two brothers, Nsoah and Kontar. They both wished to be directly next to their beloved brother, since one of them would have to take over the leadership position now that Adu was no longer with them.
Adu also had a wife, Abina, but their marriage was not a happy one, and Abina wished to be in the back row to give the closer spots to those who felt closer to her husband, Adu.
Adu and Abina had a daughter, Thema who wished to sit directly next to her mother, whom she was closest to. Thema also loved her brother, Donkor very much and wished to be directly next to him as well.
Abina’s marriage with Adu was fractured mainly because of him being unfaithful, in particular, his affair with Abina’s sister, Morowa. Abina despised Morowa because of this, in part because she knew Morowa had a connection with Adu that she never did. Because of this, Morowa wanted to be directly next to Adu’s burial. Morowa also had an illegitimate son with Adu, whose name was Sono. Morowa and Abina both did not ackowledge him as their son, so they would not sit directly next to him.
Nsoah had two sons, Yawo and Kwame. Kwame was closest to his father, Nsoah, so he sat directly next to Nsoah. He was also interested in Abina’s daughter, Thema, so he made sure to also sit directly next to her. Yawo never felt close to his father or Adu, so he sat in the back corner, as far away as possible from his father.
Yawo was married to a woman named Efia. He wanted to sit next to his wife, but Efia was close to Abina and wanted to sit directly next to her during her time of pain.
